Heel Tough Blog: 2018 Prospects Wrap Up

With the Texas state championships finishing up on Saturday, the 2018 season has officially come to an end. With that, it’s time to take a look back at some of the Heels major targets’ 2018 seasons. We start by looking at the Heels current commits, followed by the Heels targets in the current four classes to be offered.

Commits

2019

4PRO Sam Howell- Sun Valley (Indian Trail, NC)

179–229, 3240 yds, 36 TD, 8 INT, 175 rush, 1392 yds, 17 TD

Howell was one of the top quarterbacks in the state of North Carolina once again on his way to Gatorade Player of the Year Honors and Arnold R. Solomon Player of the Year awards in the state of North Carolina. Howell was also named the offensive player of the year in the Southern Carolina Conference. Although his team was knocked out in the 2nd round of the 3AA state playoffs, it was another fantastic season for one of the state’s greatest quarterbacks of all time.

4WR Khafre Brown- West Mecklenburg (Charlotte, NC)

51 rec, 860 yds, 9 TD, 22 rush, 59 yds, TD, 5 KR, 35.8 avg, TD

Brown finished his high school career with the best statistical season of his career. Brown played all 12 games and his performance resulted in first team All-South Meck 7 Conference Honors and Brown was a key in West Meck’s run to the state quarterfinals, their deepest playoff run in years.

3OT Triston Miller- Charlotte Country Day (Charlotte, NC)

12 ttkl, 4.0 TFL, 1.5 scks

Miller played both sides of the ball this season for a Charlotte Country Day team that averaged 187.8 yards rushing per game. Miller was key cog in an offensive line unit that allowed the Buccaneers to go on a state championship run, and claim their first state championship since 2010.

3WR Emery Simmons- South View (Hope Mills, NC)

55 rec, 997 yds, 12 TD, 8 ttkl, INT, 3 PD, 16 KR, 25.7 avg

Simmons led the way receiving for South View and combined that with his solid season as the teams kick returner and you can see why he was named a first team All-Patriot Conference selection and helped his quarterback, Donovan Brewington, earn the conference’s offensive player of the year honors. Simmons and South View were knocked out of the 4A state playoffs in the second round.

3RB Josh Henderson- Hun School (Princeton, NJ)

80 rush, 833 yds, 7 TD, 10 rec, 162 yds, 2 TD

Henderson had another strong season to close his his high school season, as he put these stats up while only playing an eight game schedule with the Hun School. His 10.4 yards per carry were enough to earn him first team All-Mid-Atlantic Prep Conference Honors and a conference championship title (Hun School can not qualify for any of the New Jersey state championship brackets because of the conference they are a part of.

3S Giovanni Biggers- The Boy’s Latin School (Baltimore, MD)

No Stats

Unfortunately, MaxPreps does not have Biggers senior stats, but he was named to the All-MIAA B Region team. The Boy’s Latin School did not qualify for the Maryland state playoffs.

3S Khadry Jackson- Windermere Prep (Windermere, FL)

40 ttkl, 13.0 TFL, 2.0 scks, FR, 18 rec, 404 yds, 6 TD, 25 rush, 118 yds, 2 TD

Jackson’s athleticism allowed him to be used on both sides of the football and he was effective wherever he was at. Jackson was named an All-Sunshine State Athletic Conference first teamer and helped Windermere Prep advance to the Sunshine State state semifinals.

3WR Welton Spottsville- Havelock (Havelock, NC)

48 rec, 987 yds, 13 TD, 25 rush, 347 yds, 6 TD, 12 ttkl, 1.0 sck, FR

Spottsville had a fantastic senior season, as he led Havelock in all of the major receiving categories. Unfortunately, the Coastal 3A all-conference teams won’t be announced until mid-January, but one would expect Spottsville to be a first team selection. Spottsville and Havelock were upset in the 3A state semifinals as they were looking for back-to-back state championship appearances.

3OT Asim Richards- Haverford School (Haverford, PA)

17 ttkl, 2.0 scks, FR

Richards didn’t as much defensively as he did a year ago, as he was focused on building himself as an offensive lineman. He did just that, as he earned first team All-Inter Atlantic Conference honors, despite Haverford having a rough season in which they missed the playoffs.

3Kamari Morales- Lincoln (Tallahassee, FL)

48 rec, 482 yds, 4 TD, 24 rush, 80 yds, 3 TD, 2–4, 73 yds, TD, 0 INT, 4 ttkl, 13 punts, 11.8 avg

Morales was used in so many different ways for Lincoln this season and had a solid finish to his career. Currently the conference teams have not been released, but Morales was all-state a year ago, so expect him to at least be all-conference this season. Morales’ senior season ended in the second round of the 7A state playoffs.

3SDE Tomari Fox- Collins Hill (Suwanee, GA)

71 ttkl, 15.0 TFL, 8.0 scks, 13 QB hur, 2 FF, FR

Fox had a breakout senior season. Fox was named first team All-Region 6 and first team All-Gwinnett County for his efforts this season, but unfortunately Fox and his teammates didn’t get the chance to play in the playoffs, as Collins Hill finished the regular season at 3–8.

3CB Storm Duck- Boiling Springs (Boiling Springs, SC)

3 INT

Unfortunately, the only stat available on MaxPreps for Duck is his interceptions, but that is a good number for him, as he entered 2018 with just one career interception. So far, it doesn’t appearance that the all-region teams have been released, but Duck should have a good chance to make an appearance when they are released. Duck and Boiling Springs were eliminated in the first round of the AAAAA playoffs.

3SDE Kevin Hester- North Cobb (Kennesaw, GA)

37 ttkl, 6.0 scks

Hester played well in his first year of organized football to get him on people’s radars. Hester appears to have missed the all-conference team, but that doesn’t take away from the good season he had. North Cobb finished the regular season 6–4, but did not qualify for the AAAAAAA playoffs.

3WR Justin Olson- North Mecklenburg (Huntersville, NC)

63 rec, 1106 yds, 14 TD, 6 KR, 45.8 avg, TD, 14 PR, 18.3 avg, 2 TD

Olson had a phenomenal senior season, easily the best year of his career, in 2018. Olson received first team All-I-Meck honors and was named the conference’s special teams player of the year. Olson and North Meck were knocked out in the first round of the 4AA state playoffs.

3SDE Kristian Varner- Hiram (Hiram, GA)

44 ttkl, 4.0 scks, FF

Varner had a solid year to close out his high school career. Varner’s season wasn’t enough to land him on the all-region teams in the AAAAA Region 7 and he and his teammates were left out of the AAAAA playoffs following a 4–6 season.

3OT Wyatt Tunall- Chester (Chester, SC)

38 pancake blks.

Tunall had a strong close to his career, as part of an offensive line that paved the way for a unit that averaged 280.9 yards rushing per game. Tunall was in the running for Mr. Football in the state of South Carolina and was a key member of a Chester team that went a perfect 15–0 and concluded the season with their first state title since 1963.

3CB Obi Egbuna- Charlotte Christian (Charlotte, NC)

41 ttkl, 3.0 TFL, 2.0 scks, 5 INT, 12 PD

Egbuna had another good season for the Knights. Expect him to get heavy consideration for all-county when that team is revealed in the coming weeks. That honor would be added to Egbuna state championship ring, as the Knights finished with a perfect 11–0 record to win back-to-back state titles.

2P Ben Kiernan- Wakefield (Raleigh, NC)

39 punts, 45.8 avg, 23 inside the 20

Kiernan looked about as good as you possibly can at the punter spot this season. Kiernan was part of a Wakefield team that finished 5–7 and lost in the first round of the 4AA state playoffs, a huge improvement over last year’s 0–11 record.

2LS Drew Little- North Stanly (New London, NC)

127 ttkl, 4.0 scks, 2 FR, 2 INT

Little will be brought to Carolina as a long snapper, but this season he was also a star at linebacker. So far, the All-Yadkin Valley Conference team has not been released, but one would think he will be one of the headliners when that team is released. Little and his North Stanly teammates were knocked out of the playoffs in the quarterfinals to eventual state title winner Tarboro.

2020

3RB Elijah Burris- Mountain Island Charter (Mt. Holly, NC)

194 rush, 2832 yds, 34 TD, 9 rec, 173 yds, 2 TD, 2 KR, 27.5 avg

Burris was one of the top players in the state of North Carolina, as he finished second in the state in rushing yards and third in the state in rushing touchdowns. Burris was the Southern Piedmont offensive player of the year and a first team All-Southern Piedmont member, and one would also expect him to be in the running for Mecklenburg County player of the year. Unfortunately for Burris and Mountain Island, they were bounced from the playoffs in the first round.
