Heel Tough Blog: 2020 3✮ CB Jayden Chalmers Commits to Carolina

Hudl

The Tar Heels are once again one of the hottest teams on the 2020 recruiting trail. After the Heels received three commitments between Saturday and Monday, two of which were in the 2020 class, the Heels would add their fourth commitment in three days on Thursday night when Jayden Chalmers announced his commitment to Carolina. Chalmers commitment comes just one day after he received an offer from Mack Brown and as Inside Carolina’s Don Callahan called it, his dream school.

Chalmers, a teammate of 5✮ WDE Desmond Evans at Lee County High School in Sanford, NC, finished his junior season with 22 total tackles, 2 interceptions and 15 pass deflections, the latter of which was one of the top marks in the state of North Carolina.

Chalmers will be have a chance to make a nice impact in Jay Bateman’s zone-heavy scheme. Chalmers did a great job of breaking on the ball and while he may not have the interception numbers, he does a good job of getting a hand in there to break passes up. Chalmers is a solid tackler in the open, but might not be a strong enough tackler just yet to play nickel. Chalmers also brings some special value, although he was not the primary returner for Lee County a year ago.

With Chalmers commitment, the Heels now have eighteen prospects committed in the 2020 class. The commitment moves Carolina above Florida into 8th overall in the 247Sports Composite rankings. That is the highest the class has reached in the Composite rankings since the Butch Davis era. The class does remain 3rd in ACC. According to Jacolby Criswell and Lamareon James, two commits who have been extremely influential in recruiting since their commitment, another commitment should be coming sooner rather than later.
