Mack Brown and his staff are at again on the 2020 recruiting trail, this time landing one of the top defensive tackles in the 2020 class The ,their fourth defensive line commitment in the last three weeks.
2020 3✮ DT Clyde Pinder Jr. announced his commitment to Carolina on Friday night, despite not taking an official visit to Chapel Hill this summer. Pinder Jr., the No. 38 DT in the 2020 class according to 247Sports, is heading into his senior season at Florida-powerhouse Armwood High School in Seffner, FL. As a junior, Pinder Jr. finished with 60 total tackles, including 15.0 tackles for loss and 11.0 sacks, while helping lead Armwood to the 6A state title game where they would fall to Northwestern High School out of Miami. Prior to his time at Armwood, Pinder Jr. played two years at East Bay High School in Gibsonton, FL. As a sophomore at East Bay, Pinder Jr. racked up 41 total tackles, including 15.5 for a loss and 5.5 sacks.
Pinder Jr. might be listed as a 3✮, but his tape is definitely that of a 4✮. His hands might be the most powerful of any defensive linemen in this class and he combines it with his athleticism to make him a pass rushing force. He is athletic enough to play the 3-4 defensive end spot, the same spot that he plays at the high school level, but also has the size to play the nose tackle spot, as well. With that amount of flexibility, combined with the fact that he lives in opposing backfields, Pinder Jr. has the ability to make an impact early on in his college career.
With Pinder’s commitment, the Heels 2020 class moves back up to 17th in the 247Sports Composite overall rankings after dropping to 18th earlier in the day. The Heels do remain 4th in the ACC rankings.
