Heel Tough Blog: 2022 Early Signing Day Preview

The Tar Heels 2022 early signing day is set for Wednesday, one that is set to be one of the most lucrative in program history. The Tar Heels are set to sign the nation’s No. 8 class according to 247Sports, headlined by two of the top players in the country on each side of the football. Let’s get you for this exciting day for Tar Heel football with a look at some of the top storylines heading into Wednesday’s early signing day.

All Sixteen Commits Expected to Sign Early

Going into Wednesday, it would appear that the Tar Heels are set to sign every current commit in this absolutely loaded class. Four members of the class (George Pettaway, Malaki Hamrick, Beau Atkinson and Trevyon Green) were on campus this weekend and it doesn’t appear that any of the other commits who didn’t make the trip to Chapel Hill took a trip anywhere else, a promising sign that all sixteen guys will sign at some point during the early signing period. If this is the case, the team will have one of the most purely talented classes in the country with the class ranking 5th overall based on the average ratings, according to 247Sports.

Is This It For the 2022 Class?

In two of the first three recruiting cycles under Mack Brown, the Tar Heels have added a defensive back in the late signing period and the question now becomes will the Tar Heels dip their toe in the late signing period once again this season. As of right now, there don’t seem to be many realistic targets for the team that will be pushing their recruitment to the late period, but they did offer 3✮ DT Ahmad Moten back on December 7th, which was roughly around the time they offered Dontae Balfour a year ago. He is at least worth keeping an eye on moving forward.

More Attention Now on The Portal

With this class pretty much filled out, it looks like the staff’s attention is now starting to shift towards the new element of the offseason: the transfer portal. The Tar Heels hosted a group of transfers for visits over the weekend and appear as if they will take multiple transfers to try and find some help and depth at key positions this season. The positions that the Tar Heels have been tied to the most so far are edge rusher, wide receiver and offensive tackle.
