It was just eleven days ago that 2025 3✮ ATH Gus Ritchey announced that he was committing to the Tar Heels over NC State. Now, not even two weeks later, he has flipped that decision.
On Saturday afternoon, Ritchey revealed via social media that he was flipping his commitment to the Wolfpack and shutting down his commitment. In the statement that he posted, he said that he felt like his “heart was pulling him in a different direction”.
It seems like the main reason behind this has to do with the side of the football the schools wanted him to play. The Tar Heels looked at him as a defensive line prospect, hence Tim Cross being his main recruiter. NC State is rumored to be more open to using him as a tight end, the other position that he played on the offensive side of the ball a year ago.
With his decommitment, the Tar Heels are back down to one commit in the 2025 class, 4✮ QB Bryce Baker. Losing a guy this early is never the end of the world, but a flip to a rival is never what you want regardless of when it happens. The Tar Heel staff needs to put this one behind them and build off of the momentum that they have had the last couple of months in state outside of Ritchey.
