Heel Tough Blog: Antoine Green Day-to-Day, No Update on Ja'Qurious Conley

Jim Dedmon- USA Today Sports

Monday’s press conference day was a somber one spent recapping the win over Wake Forest, but more importantly, paying tribute to the fallen Virginia players that were involved in the late-night shooting in Charlottesville. While football clearly pales in comparison, the program did update the injury status of wide receiver Antoine Green, who was banged up on Saturday night and did not return.

Green exited Saturday’s game against Wake Forest in the second quarter after taking a hit to the head by Demon Deacons safety A.J. Williams that resulted in a targeting penalty. His injury was classified as an upper-body injury, but it would appear that Green is more than likely in the concussion protocol. This morning, the team released the information that he will be monitored throughout the week, meaning that he will be questionable heading into this weekend’s matchup with Georgia Tech.

If Green is unable to go, they will rely heavily on Gavin Blackwell to reassume the starting role that he held in the first three games of the season. J.J. Jones will also be counted on to fill the deep threat role that Green has had so much success in so far this season. Josh Downs could also see some more snaps out wide, which would allow for Kobe Paysour to get more snaps, something that is well deserved with how well he has played.

As for Ja’Qurious Conley, the indication by those around the program is that he suffered some sort of setback in his recovery from his lower-body injury last week during practice. The program did not release any official update on him today, but the chatter does seem to suggest that this will likely end his season. He played in just two games for the Tar Heels this season, playing seven snaps on special teams, meaning he will be eligible for a redshirt this offseason.
