Heel Tough Blog: Best Chances to Land- June 23rd-25th

The Tar Heels closed out the month of June with a massive weekend of official visits as they hosted a majority of their top remaining targets in the 2024 class. The team has already landed one commitment from the weekend in 4✮ CB Zion Ferguson and they are hoping that will only be the beginning of a lucrative set of commitments from this group of visitors. Here is a look at the guys that the team has the best chance to land from this weekend.

6. 4✮ WR Jordan Shipp- Providence Day (Charlotte, NC)

Brandon Burdette

Getting Shipp on campus this weekend was a big accomplishment for the team after it looked like Michigan might wrap this up earlier in the month. The Tar Heels seem to be one team that would have any shot to make him reconsider based off of what he has told major recruiting sites, but they need to have blown him away this weekend. While it is certainly possible that Lonnie Galloway could have done that, he will likely head to join his high school teammates in Ann Arbor when he commits on July 16th.

5. 3✮ WR Keenan Jackson- Weddington (Matthews, NC)

Josh K. Wallace

The Tar Heels have been in a really good spot in this recruitment for a while now, but it seems like this is more of a race than it appeared in the spring. Virginia Tech, Duke and NC State have all received official visits this month, but it may be down to the Tar Heels and Wolfpack. There are a lot of different factors that go into this recruitment and the Tar Heels still have to feel good, but what once felt like a commanding lead is no more.

4. 4✮ WR Braylon Staley- Aiken (Aiken, SC)

Staley was also destined for Clemson entering the month, but two commits at the receiver position after the first weekend took that option off the table. That broke the door wide open for the Tar Heels, who assumed the lead position in this race heading into the rest of his official visits. Tennessee, though, blew him away last weekend almost causing him to cancel his trip to Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels certainly had a chance to rally this weekend, but with how well things went in Knoxville, they had to have knocked it out of the park.

3. 4✮ S Malcolm Ziglar- Fuquay-Varina (Fuquay Varina, NC)

Ziglar is one of the most important targets that the team has had on campus this entire month and how his recruitment ends will determine a lot for the Tar Heels. The Tar Heel staff got the final shot here, but this is a race that seems to be neck-and-neck as we head towards his July 17th decision date. The Tar Heels have a legitimate shot here and they need it with the issues they have had in the home state this season.

2. 4✮ WR Alex Taylor- Grimsley (Greensboro, NC)

Spencer Thomas Editz

Taylor entered the month with Clemson the runaway favorite to land him, With the Tigers filling up, though, the attention turned to the two in-state squads who are left battling it out for him. NC State has fought hard in this one, but it looks as if Taylor has a strong connection to the Tar Heels right now. Penn State is the other school to watch here after he sandwiched an official trip up there in between the trips to Raleigh and Chapel Hill, but the Tar Heels look to be the leader at this time. Getting him to pop soon will be important, though.

1. 3✮ WR Javarius Green- Crest (Shelby, NC)

Green was the wide receiver that the Tar Heels came into the month in the best position with and that still feels to be the case. The offer from Alabama hasn’t amounted to anything and his visit to Michigan State went well, but that was his first trip there. It feels like the Tar Heel staff has put in the work here and should be the pick come July 18th.
