Heel Tough Blog: Donovan "Puff" Johnson Update

Yesterday, Roy Williams met with the ACC media via a zoom call as he’s done every week in this unique season. During his press availability, Williams’ updated the status of Donovan “Puff” Johnson who missed Saturday’s game with a sprained toe. Johnson didn't practice on Sunday, or Monday before making the trip with the team to Pittsburgh for tonight’s game against the Panthers. With that in mind, and knowing how cautious the Hall of Fame head coach is with injuries, it’s unlikely that Johnson will be available for tonight’s game.

It’s been noted that Carolina has been using 6 freshmen as part of their 10 man rotation. Upon the return of redshirt freshman Anthony Harris, that number is really 7 out of 11. The injury to Johnson, along with the emergence of the other rookie guards, it’s hard to imagine Puff making it back into the rotation this season. After playing a season high 9 minutes against Notre Dame, the most court time Johnson saw was 4 minutes against Syracuse. Since the return of the aforementioned Harris, Johnson only saw a combined 3 minutes of action, before his injury. He’s only averaging 1.1 points per game, on 43% shooting from the field. There’s no reason to be discouraged about his play this season, as Roy Williams is adamant he’ll be a big player for the Tar Heels at some point in his career.
