Monday was the final press conference for Tar Heel head coach Mack Brown before the 2022 opener against Florida A&M coming up this Saturday. As he told the media the last couple of weeks, he did reveal their team’s depth chart as the team now heads into full prep mode for the game, including announcing his starting quarterback after the long battle that began late last season.

Redshirt freshman Drake Maye will be the first quarterback on the field on Saturday according to Brown who shied away from answering any questions about how they came to the decision. Brown said that there is a possibility that both quarterbacks will play, but did not specify whether that meant on Saturday or just this season in general. He did say last week, though, that this will not be a drive-by-drive job and that the winner of the battle, who we now know is Maye, will get a chance to be the starter before they would make a move to the backup.

Maye will inherit the job having played 41 snaps as a true freshman in 2021. He completed seven of his ten pass attempts for 89 yards and ran for 62 yards on six attempts. In the spring game back in April, he completed nine of his twelve attempts for 113 yards and a touchdown, showing off some nice ability on the move and sorting through his progressions well. This follows an amazing high school career at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, NC where he threw for 6,713 yards and posted an 86-7 TD-INT ratio over two years as the starter.

Brown broke down the entire depth earlier this morning and we will have a full breakdown of that later on today right here on the Heel Tough Blog.
