Carolina’s roster may be set for the 2022-23 season, but the future isn’t as clear, as Carolina Basketball continues to take shape of Hubert Davis’s vision. The roster can get a big lift today, as a 5-star prospect, and wildly considered the #1 player in the 2023 class, Gregory “GG” Jackson will make his college decision. Jackson, who hails from Columbia, South Carolina, and powerhouse Ridge View high school, came on the scene last summer and hasn’t looked back, as he was virtually recruited by every major program in college basketball. In addition to playing for Ridge View, Jackson is a member of Chris Paul’s AAU team, CP3, where he really developed into the player he is today. Just this past season, GG was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of South Carolina.
Jackson has narrowed his decision down to North Carolina, South Carolina, UMass, Duke, Auburn, Georgetown, as well as playing professionally in the G-League. With that in mind, it is believed that the decision will come down to UNC, USC, and UMass.
There was talk about Jackson reclassifying to the 2022 class, but that conversation has cooled off as of late, which benefits UNC as they currently don’t have any available scholarships. The potential commitment of Jackson would be huge for many different reasons. For starters, it would be the second commitment of the 2023 class, joining fellow 5-star Simeon Wilcher. Jackson would also be the highest-rated recruit to commit to UNC since Harrison Barnes back in 2010.
According to 247Sports, they have 5 crystal balls for Jackson to announce his commitment to North Carolina, and headline what could be a star-powered 2023 class. With all signs pointing to Jackson taking his talents to Chapel Hill, it’s not a matter of if he’ll play at UNC, it’s a matter of when.
