The Heels might be the hottest team in the country on both the football and basketball recruiting trails at the moment. Wednesday night produced the Heels fourth commitment to the 2020 class in the last six days when 3✮ ATH Cedric Gray committed.

Gray, who announced his commitment via Twitter shortly after 9:00 PM on Wednesday night, committed just eleven days after receiving the offer. Gray enters his senior year at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, NC off a junior season where he led his team in almost every major receiving category, catching 55 passes for 891 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also playing a significant role defensively, finishing with 60 total tackles, 6.0 TFL, and 3.0 sacks. Gray played a similar role offensively as a sophomore, catching 37 passes for 684 yards and four touchdowns. Unfortunately, his defensive stats were not made available for his sophomore season on MaxPreps.

Gray’s tape will get you even more excited about his commitment. Offensively, Gray’s great acceleration and burst allow him to create separation with relative ease and cause problems after for defenders. When he's unable to create separation, he still shows the ability to go up and get the football at 6’2, creating a wide catch radius. It also helps that Gray catches just about everything. Gray flexibility to play both in the slot and on the outside doesn’t hurt either. He has two one-handed catches and a diving grab that proves he has the ability to catch just about anything. On the defensive side of the football, Gray’s speed allows him to close gaps quickly and his strong open field tackling ability combines to make him a strong tackler. Gray plays linebacker at the high school level, but at 190 lbs., he will likely have to make the move to safety if he plays on the defensive side of the football. His ball skills will make the transition a bit easier if he is used in Jay Bateman’s defensive scheme.

With Gray’s commitment, the Heels are now 12 commits strong in the 2020 class. Gray’s commitment gives the Heels their sixth commitment from the state of North Carolina in the 2020 class. Florida State’s recent commitments jumped them ahead of the Heels and even with the commitment, the Heels remain where they were prior to the commitment: 8th overall and 4th in the ACC.
