Thursday morning was going to be a good one for a lot of people around the sports world. The NCAA Tournament continues tonight with second round games and the Major League Baseball season officially opens today. For Tar Heel fans, they will wake up with another reason to smile.
The pleasant news comes in the form of a commitment, as the team landed 2020 3✮ OT Trey Zimmerman this morning. At 7:30 AM, Zimmerman announced his commitment via Twitter, selecting the Heels over fellow top contender Auburn and others. Zimmerman commits to Carolina after his visit this weekend, a follow up from his February 18th visit to campus.
Zimmerman will join current Tar Heels Tyrone Hopper and Jordan Tucker as players that hail from Roswell High School in Roswell, GA. As a senior, Zimmerman, the No. 37 OT in the 2020 class, was the anchor of an offensive line that paved the way for a 1,000 yard rusher and nearly a 2,000 yard passer and helped turn around a team that went 3-8 the year prior.
The tape on Zimmerman shows that he is definitely a strong run blocker than he is pass protector, but he still shows some solid ability when he is put in pass protection situations. Zimmerman shows a very strong upper body, as he sets the tone well, driving most defenders back with ease. His footwork is solid as is his hand placement, but both will likely be focal points of Stacy Searls when Zimmerman arrives to campus. At 6’6 and 270 lbs, he has the size necessary to play at the major college football level rather quickly, so he will provide good depth immediately next season.
With Zimmerman’s commitment, the Heels 2019 class moves from 12th to 9th overall in the 2020 class, according to 247sports. If the class were to close today, that would be the Heels best class, rankings wise, ever. The Heels still remain 4th in the ACC class rankings.
