Heel Tough Blog: Kent State Transfer WR Commits to Carolina

Lisa Scalfaro- USA Today Sports

Wednesday was thought to be focused on the signing of the 2023 recruiting class. However, this evening that focus has turned back to the transfer portal. The Tar Heels have now added two commitments from the portal this evening, continuing what has been a successful week in the portal for the staff.

At exactly 6:00 PM this evening, the Tar Heels received a commitment from Kent State transfer wide receiver Devontez Walker. Walker was one of four transfer targets who visited Chapel Hill this past weekend and was the first of a group of wide receiver targets in the portal to visit campus. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

With Walker, Carolina is getting a high upside receiver who is coming off of a breakout season with the Golden Flashes. This season as a sophomore, Walker led the team in receiving, catching 58 passes for 921 yards and 11 touchdowns, the latter of which led the conference. For his efforts, he was rewarded with first team All-MAC honors. That followed a freshman season where he played in just four games, hauling in just five catches after transferring over from NC Central after they canceled their 2020 season due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

This may be the most significant addition that the Tar Heels have had in this transfer portal cycle. Walker might have dominated in a non-Power 5 conference, but he had some nice games against power conference opponents this season. This isn’t guaranteed to be a sure thing, but with how well he played this season, it’s hard to imagine he won’t challenge to be a starter for this team as one of their outside receiver spots in 2023.
