Heel Tough Blog: Sebastian Cheeks Commitment Preview

Irish Daily

Wednesday brings yet another big commitment announcement from a Tar Heel target in the 2022 class. Last Tuesday, 2022 4✮ LB target Sebastian Cheeks set his commitment date for tomorrow afternoon, as the Tar Heels hope they can go into the state of Illinois to grab another headliner for this ‘22 class.

The announcement will come tomorrow evening at 5:00 PM EST/4:00 PM CST and as of right now it appears that the decision will just be via social media. The Tar Heels are one of the finalists for his services heading in, joining the likes of Michigan, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin as the teams with hope heading in. For the majority of his recruitment, Notre Dame was considered the favorite for him, but the Fighting Irish put their priorities elsewhere, filling up at the position and opening the door in the final few months of his recruitment. It seemed like Texas was the one taking advantage of the opportunity the most, but the visit to Chapel Hill early in June made the Tar Heels legitimate contenders. Since that visit, the Tar Heels have appeared to overtake the Longhorns as the favorite, but Michigan has made a late push and Cheeks made a dead period visit to Ann Arbor recently for one last look at the campus. It appears that the Tar Heels may still be in good position, though, following that visit.

Since he announced his commitment date last Tuesday, the expert predictions have been in favor of the Tar Heels. All six of the crystal ball predictions on 247Sports.com have gone in favor of the Tar Heels, including two that were cast earlier today. The Rivals Futurecast has seven predictions cast at this point, all which are also in favor of the Tar Heels.

This was a recruitment that was probably seen as a bit of a pipe dream when the offer was handed out. However, enough things have broken the right way and the Tar Heels appear to have turned up the heat at the right times to land this commitment. This would be a nice statement to the rest of the country that the Tar Heels are able to recruit on the national level, even in places they normally don’t frequent.

Prediction: North Carolina
