Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heel Athletics Halted Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

The sports world has been shut down accordingly due to the global pandemic that is the coronavirus and, on Thursday, it was announced that all sports in the ACC will be put on hold until further notice.

This has a huge effect on many Tar Heel sports around campus, headlined by the spring sports. As of right now, sports like lacrosse, softball and baseball will halt their schedules with the hopes of resuming their seasons at a later point. As of today, the Diamond Heels sit at 12-7 (0-3) with the final game being a 9-2 win in Boshamer Stadium on Wednesday night.

The spring football schedule, which was expected to kick off on Tuesday with the opening practice, will be severely affected, as it seems unlikely that the Tar Heels will take the field at all this spring. As of right now the season is not in danger just yet, but with the uncertainty surrounding the spread of the virus, there is no telling how long these impacts could be felt.

The effect that the virus has on recruiting can not really be measured just yet, but as of right now, any visit to campus by recruits or coaches visits to recruits schools have been cancelled. This is a big blow for the Tar Heels football staff, who were expected to have 2021 5✮ CB Tony Grimes and 5✮ RB TreVeyon Henderson on campus next weekend.

In the end, all of these things are trivial when it comes to protecting the health and well-being of everyone during this trying time in our nation. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Sports will return, as will our fandom. For now, please stay safe and we at the Heel Tough Blog will try to keep you updated on any news surrounding Tar Heel football, basketball and baseball.
