The Tar Heels headed into Saturday night’s ACC Championship Game hoping to head to Miami for their second Orange Bowl appearance in three years. That will not be happening, as they were drubbed by Clemson 39-10, meaning they will be heading elsewhere as they try to snap a three game losing streak.
As first reported by Brett McMurphy of the Action Network, the Tar Heels will be heading to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl on December 28th at 8:00 PM. They will take on the Oregon Ducks, who finished the season 9-3, dropping two of their last three, including a heartbreaker to rival Oregon State.
This will be the first time ever that the two teams will meet, despite both programs playing for more than 100 years. The Ducks learned today that they will be without starting cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who is declaring for the NFL Draft.
This will be the first time that the Tar Heels have ever played in the Holiday Bowl in what will be their 37th bowl appearance. This will also be just the second time that the program will head to the West Coast for a bowl game and the first since their 1998 Las Vegas Bowl win over San Diego State. The Tar Heels are 15-21 all-time in bowl games, including 4-4 under Mack Brown. Brown is 14-10 in bowl games in his career.
The Tar Heels will not only be trying to snap their three game losing streak this season, but end their two game slide in bowl games, as well. This feels like a crucial one for this team and the direction of the program overall.
