Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Lose 4✮ RB Target to Kentucky

The Tar Heels have been pushing hard over the past few months to land a second running back in the 2024 recruiting class. The team lost one of their two remaining targets at the position, though, on Wednesday, making it a real possibility that they will not add that extra back in this cycle.

Earlier this morning, 4✮ RB Tovani Mizell announced via social media that he was committing to Kentucky following his official visit to Lexington this past weekend. The one-time Georgia commit was scheduled to take an official visit to Oklahoma this weekend after completing his first two visits. The Tar Heels got the first shot with him earlier in the month after entering June with the lead in his recruitment after establishing a strong relationship with him in the spring.

With Mizell off the board, the Tar Heels last shot to land another commitment at the position is another 4✮ from the state of Florida. Carrollwood Day’s Anthony Carrie was on campus this past weekend and following the visit, Inside Carolina’s Don Callahan reported that he is now down to two schools. The Tar Heels and Michigan State Spartans, who hosted him the second weekend of the month for an official visit, are the two that are remaining in the race that should be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

The Spartans had the clear lead in the race following his trip up to East Lansing, but the visit to Chapel Hill and Mizell’s commitment could put the Tar Heels right back in it. As of right now, the four predictions across the various recruiting websites are still in favor of the Spartans, but none of them look to be cast with a lot of confidence. It feels like there is an opportunity here for Larry Porter and the rest of the staff to pounce on.
