Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Lose Offensive Lineman to the Transfer Portal

Prior to landing an offensive lineman on Friday afternoon, the Tar Heels lost one of their current offensive linemen to the transfer portal.

As first announced by Inside Carolina, redshirt freshman offensive tackle Avery Jones has entered his name into the transfer portal.

The former 4✮ OG prospect committed to Carolina as a part of Larry Fedora’s final class back in 2018 as the Tar Heels top interior offensive line commit. In his two seasons in a Tar Heel uniform, Jones played in just one game, this past season’s game against Mercer, playing one snap. He spent the spring of 2019 at nose tackle to help at a spot where the Tar Heels were thin before moving back to the offensive line prior to the season starting.

Jones’s transfer isn’t a major blow to an offensive line unit that still remains pretty deep. The Tar Heels have landed nine commitments along the offensive line in the past two seasons, giving the Tar Heels plenty of bodies along the offensive. All but one starter returns on the offensive line, as well, along with some added experienced depth.

This is the ninth Tar Heel to enter the transfer portal this offseason, all but two of which played less than 100 snaps. The Tar Heels are still in good shape in terms of scholarship players as they remain at or just slightly above the scholarship limit of 85.
