Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Moving On From Position Coach

Just five days after the conclusion of the Tar Heels first winning season since 2016, head coach Mack Brown is making a coaching change. Outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Scott Boone and the staff have “mutually parted ways”, director of football operations Jeremy Sharpe told Inside Carolina on Thursday afternoon. The two sides part ways after Boone spent just one season on Brown’s staff.

In his lone year on staff, the Tar Heels special teams unit took a step back from that of the prior regime, struggling in just about every aspect of the game. They averaged just 41.3 yards per punt, next to worst in the ACC, and also saw struggles in the punt return (6.2) situation and both coverage situations. The coverage units along with the inconsistencies from the placekickers were areas that Brown expressed concerns with early in season, and while did show progression, they were still areas that were lacking for this team at some crucial times this season.

The belief is that the search will be for a special team coordinator that can also coach linebackers. We have you covered with all of the latest surrounding the search right here on the Heel Tough Blog.
