After the ACC revealed the conference home/away matchups for the next three seasons last week, the Tar Heels got some important news regarding their 2022 schedule on Friday.
Earlier this morning, it was revealed that the Tar Heels will be facing the Indiana Hoosiers on the road in Bloomington on November 30th as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. This will be the Tar Heels first meeting with Indiana since the two teams’ last meeting in the challenge back in 2016, a 76-67 loss for the Tar Heels in Assembly Hall. This will be the 16 meeting all time between the two legendary college basketball powers with the Hoosiers holding the overall series 9-6.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two sides in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and the fourth that will take place in Assembly Hall. The only meeting in this challenge in Chapel Hill between the two came way back in 2001, a game that the Tar Heels lost 79-66. The Tar Heels are just 1-3 against the Hoosiers in the challenge, with the lone win coming in the 2004 matchup in Bloomington. In the all time series, the two teams have split the last two meetings overall.
The Tar Heels success in the ACC/Big Ten has been rather average. The team holds an all time record of 11-12 in the event, but has struggled mightily on the road in the event, posting a 3-7 record when traveling to play another team in their place. The last three games away from Chapel Hill in the event have been losses with the last road win coming against Michigan State back in 2014.
Even with all of these stats favoring Indiana, this is a Tar Heel team that will have much bigger aspirations this upcoming season than just beating the Hoosiers in what is being deemed the Redemption Tour Part II. This will hopefully be a stepping stone along the way to a special season for Tar Heel basketball.
