Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Pick Up Commitment from 2022 3✮ OT

The first domino of the final weekend of official visits has just fallen. Just a short time ago, 2022 3✮ OT Justin Kanyuk announced via Twitter that he was committing to the Tar Heels as part of his final day of an official visit to campus. The Tar Heels are hoping that this is the start of a string of commitments that will follow this extremely important weekend of official visits that features many of the Tar Heels' top remaining targets in the class.

Kanyuk, the No. 77 offensive tackle and No. 19 player in the state of Pennsylvania, comes off of a productive junior season for Bethlehem Catholic High School in Bethlehem, PA. He was a standout for a Bethlehem Catholic team that finished the season 4-4, as he earned first team all-conference and All-Eastern Pennsylvania, while also picking up second team All-State honors. He was also a starter on the offensive line as a sophomore for a Bethlehem Catholic team that finished 7-5.

Kanyuk’s ratings may not blow you away, but his film shows that there is definitely a reason behind the Tar Heels decision to extend him an offer. First off, he possesses great size already at 6’5, 290 lbs. and has some very solid athleticism, as well. He loves the physicality in the trenches and uses his heavy hands to his advantage. He is also pretty sound technically with his good hand placement and solid footwork. The biggest concern with him has to be his level of competition, which judging by his tape is far from the best in the country. He may not be on the same level as guys like Zach Rice, Fisher Anderson or even the Tar Heels first offensive line commit of the class, Trevyon Green, but he is a nice insurance option for the team with some uncertainty still remaining around Rice and Anderson’s recruitments.

With the commitment, the Tar Heels have added their third commit in the last ten days and now have seven commits in place in what looks like a small class for the team. The Tar Heels recruiting class still sits 40th in the overall rankings and 8th in the ACC rankings according to 247Sports.
