Heel Tough Blog: Three Major In-State Targets Announce Commitment

Writer: Anthony PagnottaAnthony Pagnotta

All of the focus on the Tar Heel football recruiting trail for the past week has centered around the looming commitment from 2023 4✮ DL Jamaal Jarrett. However, over the past two days, three other major targets for the team in the class have set their commitment dates as well, including a major edge rushing target that will announce his choice on Monday.

Adam Friedman, national recruiting analyst for Rivals, posted the news on Friday night that 2023 4✮ EDGE Rico Walker will be revealing his destination sometime on Monday. For the Tar Heels, this is a big one considering how long he has been a target for them and how many visits he has taken to campus. While they do seem to be the favorite as of right now, there are many people that are still keeping an eye on Tennessee as we approach the decision. The Tar Heels and Volunteers are joined by Auburn, Florida and Maryland as part of the final five that Walker revealed back on July 1st.

Later on that evening, Tar Heel Illustrated and NCPreps’ Deana King tweeted that she had the decision date from 2023 3✮ WR Kevin Concepcion. The Charlotte area in-state target will announce his commitment on August 6th, making that final weekend of July an extremely important one in his recruitment. He has confirmed that this is a two team race with the Tar Heels battling NC State, the team that has been the perceived leader for a while now. Wherever he visits in the final weekend of the month will likely be the precursor to what his pick will be the following weekend.

The final target to set his decision this weekend was 2023 4✮ DL Daevin Hobbs. On Saturday morning, he announced that he will be committing on August 1st and 6:30 PM at a ceremony held at Jay M. Robinson High School in Concord, NC. In that same post, he revealed the six schools that are still in the hunt for him. The Tar Heels, who are seen as the favorites and have been for a while, are joined by Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, South Carolina and Tennessee as those remaining in his recruitment.

Each of these three commitments are significant ones for the Tar Heels in this 2023 class, with the Walker one potentially having an impact on what happens with the Hobbs one. Add in the announcement from Jarrett later this week and this becomes an important three week stretch as the team looks to continue their dominance in the home state.
