Heel Tough Blog: Top Tar Heel Transfer Target Withdraws from NBA Draft

Updated: May 23, 2022

After going through the NBA Draft Combine, Baylor forward Matthew Mayer has withdrawn from the 2022 NBA Draft and will transfer away from the 2021 national champions. Mayer averaged 9.8 points per game this past season while shooting 32% from behind the three-point line. For his career, he’s averaged 6.9 points, while shooting 42% from the field, and 35% from behind the three-point line.

North Carolina contacted Mayer shortly after entering the transfer portal, and the NBA Draft simultaneously. Mayer would be the final piece to a starting lineup that is returning every starter except the aforementioned Manek and would allow Hubert Davis to plug Mayer in Manek’s spot, and keep the principles that got Carolina to the precipice of a national championship intact.

The other schools to have contacted Mayer, are Big 12 rival Texas Tech, Illinois, USC, Memphis, and SEC schools Alabama and Arkansas. Even with multiple high-profile programs involved with Mayer, you have to figure given Carolina’s success with the transfer portal this past season, they’ll be the prohibitive favorites for Mayer’s services, for what will be his final season of eligibility.
