The sprint to the finish of the 2019 recruiting cycle has set up to be a crazy one over the next week and a half. The Heels have focused in on six top targets and two them announced their decision dates on Friday afternoon.
3✮ S Don Chapman will be the first to announce his commitment during a football banquet at his high school on Sunday evening. The former Colorado and Washington State commit wasn’t offered until late December, but the staff has made quick work with his recruitment. The Heels received Chapman’s only official visit of the late signing period back on January 12th and reportedly loved what Carolina had to offer. Heading into the commitment tomorrow night, it would be a significant shock if Chapman was to commit somewhere other than Carolina.
Later in the week, 4✮ OLB Eugene Asante is expected to make his decision. The Chantilly, VA product was scheduled to take his official visit to Chapel Hill next Saturday, so all signs are pointing to Carolina being out of the running for his services after his visit was pushed back to make room for an official visit to Florida State. As of right now, it seems like Virginia Tech and Florida State are the frontrunners to land on the hottest names on the recruiting trail over the last month. If he does commit elsewhere, it would appear that the Heels would then extend an offer to 3✮ ATH Syheam McQueen to help add some depth at a position that is currently lacking that at the moment.
In other news, the Heels also seem to be out of the running for 5✮ OT Darnell Wright after he decided against taking an official visit to Chapel Hill. Wright will take his official visit to Tennessee next Saturday, so it would appear that the decision for him will come down to the Volunteers and the home-state West Virginia Mountaineers on February 6th.
At this moment, it seems rather likely that the Heels will add their 22nd commitment of the 2019 class on Sunday, but the question is now becoming will they add anyone else before the class closes next Wednesday. With Asante and Wright appearing to be putting their focuses elsewhere, we’ll see where the staff will focus those efforts over the next week and a half.
