UNC had a big month of recruiting back in June and July, landing three members of their 2022 class, and bringing in transfer Dawson Garcia to join the team this season. Those two months, did a great job silencing the critics that didn’t Hubert Davis and his staff, weren’t going to be able to recruit at the level we expect at North Carolina. Those critics showed up last week, when UNC was eliminated from Jaden Bradley’s recruitment and missed on big man Isaac Traudt who committed to ACC opponent, Virginia. UNC had stayed in tack with Bradley ever since the transition from Roy Williams to Hubert Davis, with many believing the coaching change was a big factor in ultimately eliminating the Tar Heels from contention. Bradley was the top point guard target for UNC in the 2022 cycle, even with the commitment of combo guard Seth Trimble earlier this summer. Their attention now turns to Robert Dillingham in the 2023 class, who hails from Combine Academy in Lincoln, NC. As for Traudt, who visited back in June, never released his top schools, but losing him to a fierce ACC rival certainly does sting.
That bad news didn’t last too long, as last night Cam Whitmore, Carolina’s top wing target in the 2022 class, announced his final three schools, including UNC. Whitmore is also considering Villanova and Illinois as well, but UNC is in the running for his services. Hubert Davis and his staff got involved with Whitmore shortly after Davis was hired, and they have since made him a priority on the recruiting trail. Since the departure of Cam Johnson to the NBA, UNC has lacked a game-changer on the perimeter, and in UNC’s new offensive system, Whitmore would thrive the second he showed up on campus. Whitmore hasn’t released a timeline to announce his commitment, but he’s been narrowing down his recruitment over the last month, so a commitment in September isn’t out of the question.
In addition to the recruitment of Whitmore, UNC is still recruiting four-star wing Tyler Nickel, who also has UNC in the schools he’s considering. While Hubert Davis has made Whitmore a priority, the same could be said for Nickel, as UNC is committed to improving the talent across the board on their roster.
