When we began breaking down the 2020 Tar Heels recruiting class, 247Sports had it ranked third in the country behind Kentucky and our blue-blood rival, Duke. On May 6th, 247Sports released their final rankings. To the delight of many Tar Heel fans, the class headed to Chapel Hill overtook the class headed to Durham. 247Sports now has North Carolina rated as the number two class in the country, and first in the ACC. The flip does not indicate much in terms of overall talent headed to both campuses, it more so pauses the hanging of another preseason National Championship banner in Durham.
The second commit breakdown is Donovan “Puff” Johnson. Johnson, the younger brother of Carolina sharp-shooter Cam Johnson, is a 6-foot-7, 185 pound small forward from Phoenix, Arizona via Coraopolis, PA. He is a four star and 247Sports 62nd rated prospect.
What He Brings
His greatest strength is shooting. He has the potential to stretch the defense and open the floor
He possesses a good feel for the game and has a knack for finding open spots
Johnson has an off the dribble floater similar to Justin Jackson’s
At 6-foot-7 Johnson adds Leaky Black type length to the perimeter
Former Tar Heel Comparisons
-Cam Johnson
-Wayne Ellington
-Justin Jackson
Bottom Line
Johnson appears to be a three to four year guy. Adding strength, explosiveness, and gaining experience will be important. As a freshman, Johnson looks to compete for rotational minutes at the three, hoping for the opportunity to add much needed shooting depth. If Puff can develop into the left-handed shooting version of his brother, Chapel Hill will be happy.
