Yesterday, the Carolina Basketball program was on hand in Greensboro for the official announcement of the Tobacco Road Classic, a two-year agreement that will feature a neutral-site contest between UNC & NC State in Greensboro this year and next. Following yesterday’s formalities, the program released its full preseason and non-conference schedule for the 2026-27 season, the first under new head coach Michael Malone.
It had already been reported that UNC would play both USC and Indiana in preseason exhibitions, but today a third preseason contest was announced, as Carolina will host the Charlotte 49ers on October 27th, in their final preseason contest. The 49ers hired former UNC player Wes Miller this off-season as their new head coach, and former UNC assistant Marcus Paige left Chapel Hill for an elevated role on Miller’s staff.
The non-conference portion of the schedule begins with a six-game homestand, beginning with Western Carolina on November 2nd. After hosting WCU, Wofford, Wyoming, Georgia, Marshall, and Monmouth will all make their way to the Dean Dome before the Tar Heels play a regular-season game off campus. They will close out the opening month of the season with a neutral-site game against West Virginia in Charlotte, in the second annual Dickie V Invitational, which was reported earlier this summer.
December begins with two more home games, but against tougher competition, as UNC will host Arkansas in the annual ACC/SEC Challenge before they host the Butler Bulldogs, out of the Big East, as that home-and-home gets underway. December 12th will mark the first true road game for the Tar Heels, the return game with Georgetown, after UNC routed the Hoyas in Chapel Hill last year. Neutral-site contests with NC State and Kentucky will take place before the Christmas holiday, before closing out the 2026 portion of the calendar, with a home date against The Citadel.
The final non-conference game will come in late January, when UNC will travel to Nashville to face Illinois in the Nashville Hoops Showdown, a year after Illinois made the Final Four under Brad Underwood. The expanded regular season has allowed teams the opportunity to play non-conference games in either January or February to break up the long run of conference play, and after failing to do so under Hubert Davis, Michael Malone wasted no time getting Carolina into a marquee game at a time of the season when everyone can use a break from league competition.
Like last year, the Tar Heels will enjoy long stretches at home in the non-conference portion of their season, while hosting schools from the SEC and the Big East. And while Carolina won’t be in the Maui Invitational or the Battle 4 Atlantis, UNC will play non-conference games in Charlotte, Greensboro, Washington, D.C., Madison Square Garden, and Nashville, in addition to playing in Indianapolis in the preseason.
All in all, this is a schedule that will allow Carolina to stack some early wins in November and December, while also highlighting the areas they’ll need to grow and develop by the time ACC play begins, which is the perfect blend for a program featuring a new head coach and a revamped roster via the transfer portal.
