The Tar Heels are continuing to make additions in the 2025 class ahead of tomorrow’s National Signing Day and their latest commitment comes just a few hours before the festivities start.
As first reported by Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports, the Tar Heels have landed a commitment from 2025 unranked RB Jaylon Nichols following an offer from the program on Monday. He becomes the fourth running back to commit to the class and the second that will sign tomorrow.
Nichols just concluded his senior season at Neville High School in Monroe, LA where he earned first team All-District 2-5A after carrying the ball 219 times for 1,417 yards and 24 touchdowns and catching 15 passes for 110 yards in 12 games. In 2023, as a junior, he ran for 258 yards and six touchdowns on 47 carries and caught three passes for 21 yards in four games. In just one game as a sophomore, he ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns on just 17 carries.
Nichols, who measures in at 6’0, 190 lbs., is another electric addition to this Tar Heel offense. He has great open field speed and burst, but his strength is how well he evades tacklers. His ability to stick his foot in the ground and change direction and his use of the spin move makes him incredibly difficult to take down in the opening field. He also runs with a nice mean streak that allows him to break tackles like we have seen recent Tar Heel running backs do. The biggest question marks will be how he progresses as a pass catcher and what he brings to the table as a pass protector. All things considered, this is a nice upside pickup that provides more depth in the running back room.
With the commitment, the Tar Heels are now up to 12 prospects that they expect to sign on Wednesday. The Tar Heels’ 2025 class currently sits No. 43 overall and No. 10 in the ACC after this addition, a marked improvement from where the team was when Bill Belichick first took the job.
