The Tar Heels are off to a strong start on the 2026 recruiting trail but the team suffered a pretty substantial loss on Friday evening.

As first reported by Rivals recruiting reporter Sam Spiegelman, 2026 3✮ CB O’Mari Johnson has decommitted from Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels less than two months after committing.

His decommitment follows a mysterious tweet on Friday afternoon where he put up six different emojis, suggesting he is reopening his recruitment. Judging off of his tweet, it appears that the Tar Heels are still in the hunt here, but as with any decommitment, it is highly unlikely that he will be recommitting. Expect him to take a multitude of different official visits over the next month as he searches for his new destination.

With the decommitment, the Tar Heels have lost their second-highest rated commit in the 2026 class and their link to one of the most loaded pipelines in the country this season at Jackson Academy in Mississippi. The loss also drops them one spot in the overall and ACC rankings for this class according to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings.
