After the focus of the last few days had been on what was happening around the Tar Heels in the transfer portal, the team flipped the attention to the 2026 recruiting trail for a moment on Friday afternoon.
As he revealed via social media, 2026 3✮ DL Jimmy-Phrisco Alo-Suliafu has committed to the Tar Heels following his official visit to Chapel Hill over the weekend. Alo-Suliafu chose the Tar Heels over offers from Auburn, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma and others.
Alo-Suliafu, the No. 560 overall and No. 61 defensive lineman in the 2026 class according to 247Sports Composite Rankings, hails from Katy Jordan High School in Fulshear, TX. This past season, as a junior, he finished the season with 70 total tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks, three quarterback hurries, two passes defenses, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery on the way to earning first team All . He played in just three games back in 2023, registering seven total tackles in that limited action. His freshman season, he played a fair amount for Katy High School, but unfortunately those stats are not available via MaxPreps.
At 6’3, 265 lbs, Alo-Suliafu has some nice size for that edge rusher role that the Tar Heels are looking for, but he is very versatile and succeeds on the inside despite not having the size. It all starts with his nice release off the line of scrimmage which does allow him to win some reps against the slower tackles and guards. His speed isn’t mind-blowing, but he does have the willingness and want to, which allows him to track guys down and make plays. He plays with an impressive level of physicality, especially for someone of his size, and does an outstanding job of mixing in the technical pass rushing moves when needed to help shed blocks. He utilizes his arms well and has good hand placement, which allows him to knocks offensive lineman back with his powerful up body and toss them aside. Figuring out which position they want to play him at will be key for the Tar Heels here, but there is a lot of upside for him at both positions. It may take him some time as it does with most linemen to navigate the learning curve and step up in physicality, but he has a chance to be a nice multi-year contributor for the Tar Heels once he gets here.
With his commitment, the Tar Heels are already sitting with 14 commitments in the 2026 class, three of which come along the defensive line. When it comes to that defensive line room, the Tar Heels are searching hard for depth there as we speak for this year’s roster and that need isn’t going to change for next year so it feels like they are still far from done in that room in this class.
In terms of class rankings, this 2026 class now jumps all the way up to 9th overall and 2nd in the ACC in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings.
