The Tar Heels have had some good injury luck to start camp, but that luck ran out earlier this week according to reports that surfaced today about an injury to one of the defense’s most important pieces.
Inside Carolina’s Adam Smith was the first to report that sophomore linebacker Amare Campbell has a broken right hand. He did not practice on Saturday or Sunday, but the plan is for him to return to the practice field soon. The good news is that he is not expected to miss the season opener against Minnesota on August 29th, but there is a good chance he could be limited by a club in the game.
With him sidelined, the guys battling for the backup reps will now take on first team reps. Sophomore Michael Short and redshirt freshman Caleb LaVallee are probably the best bets to get those reps, but as Brown told the media on Sunday, true freshmen Ashton Woods and Crews Law and sophomore walk-on Cade Law could also get looks there.
This injury is far from a positive, but it could be a mild blessing in disguise when it comes to finding separation amongst this group. As long as Campbell is too limited by the injury, this shouldn’t cause an issue.
