After losing Taylor Edwards, who was hired by Bill Belichick earlier this off-season, to Miami, Belichick has been busy putting together his staff, with the conclusion of the NFL regular season. Today alone Belichick has made two hires, with a third one expected, beginning with adding Matt Lombardi, the son of program GM, Michael Lombardi to the staff, as an offensive assistant, with the possibility of being the QB coach. Lombardi joins Carolina, after spending the season with the Oregon Ducks, a team that went undefeated in the regular season, before falling to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Lombardi, has ties to the NFL, having spent time with both the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Carolina Panthers. While Carolina hasn’t made it official, it appears that Lombardi will work under Freddie Kitchens, who is expected to be the offensive coordinator for UNC in 2025, after serving as the tight end’s coach the last two seasons.Â
In addition to the Lombardi hire, Belichick is expected to hire Cory Giddings, to fill a role in the player personnel department, hiring him away from UCF, where he was the Director of Player Personnel with the Golden Knights. Giddings played defensive back at Stony Brook in the mid-2000s, and is currently one of the few Belichick hires that doesn’t have any NFL experience.Â
Lastly, Carolina is expected to hire Moses Cabrera as the new head of strength and conditioning. Cabrera has strong ties to Belichick serving on his staff from 2011-2023, helping the Patriots win multiple Super Bowl championships. While Cabrera has strong ties to the NFL, and Belichick, he also served time in college, with Fresno State, in the mid to late 2000s, along with one season in Boulder, with the Colorado Buffaloes.Â
When Belichick appeared on the Pat McAfee show last week, he made it known that his staff would come together after the NFL season regular season finished up, and if today is any indication, he was true to his word, making these three hires, with more assistant, and position coaches to follow.Â
