Heel Tough Blog: Drake Maye Seeking to Impress in Elite 11 Finals

For the second straight season a Tar Heel commit will be looking to impress at the Elite 11 Finals, one that will take place in Nashville this year instead of in Frisco, TX as they did a year ago. Tar Heels 2021 4✮ PRO commit Drake Maye, the son of former Tar Heel gunslinger Mark Maye, will be looking to become the first ever Tar Heel winner of the event that will feature him and nineteen more of the nation’s quarterback prospects squaring off over the next three days.

Maye will be one of the favorites in the event, especially after Washington Sam Huard had to remove himself from the competition after recent contact with someone who had contracted the coronavirus. Guys like Kyle McCord and Caleb Williams will definitely be tough to beat out, but Maye has the talent necessary to make a lot of noise this week in Nashville and should have no problem landing a spot as one of the Elite 11 finalists at week’s end, especially after having a nice warm-up with the Blazin’ 7-on-7 tournament in Rock Hill, SC last weekend. Even if Maye isn’t able to come away with the Elite 11 MVP, if he can do enough to impress the masses, there is a good chance that he could move himself into contention to become a 247Sports Composite 5✮ at some point in the near future.

Maye will enter the camp boasting one of the more impressive resumes of any of the quarterbacks that will be in attendance. In thirteen games in 2019, Maye threw for 3,512 yards, 50 touchdowns and just two interceptions while completing 72.4% of his passes. Those stats were enough to earn him Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the state of North Carolina, as well as offensive player of the year honors in the Southwestern 4A conference and All-Observer honors in the Charlotte area while setting multiple school records. Prior to his amazing junior season, Maye had a strong sophomore season with the Mustangs, throwing for 3,201 yards, 36 touchdowns and just five interceptions, earning Southwestern 4A all-conference honors.

Keep it tuned to the Heel Tough Blog website throughout the week where we will keep you updated on everything happening in Nashville with Drake Maye, as well as all of the other major Tar Heel football storylines.
