Over the last couple of weeks, Hubert Davis was able to retain four starters from a team that was on the brink of winning the national championship for the upcoming 2022-23 season. Today, Davis landed the #1 power forward, and arguably the best player in the 2023 recruiting cycle, as Gregory “GG” Jackson committed to UNC over Duke, South Carolina, and others. Jackson, who is the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year in South Carolina, has blossomed into a modern-day forward and is set to thrive in Davis’s system.
Upon being hired last April following the retirement of Roy Williams, Jackson was one of the first players Davis targeted in the 2023 cycle. Davis and his staff spent countless hours recruiting Jackson and were a consistent presence at many of his high school, and AAU contests. It’s safe to say that with his commitment, all of that hard work, has been paid off.
The commitment of Jackson is huge for the future of the frontcourt in Chapel Hill, as Armando Bacot is set to play his senior season this winter, and every other big man on the roster is a freshman of some capacity. Jackson will add a big boost in talent, as well as depth, as Davis continues to set the program up for success in the years to come.
GG becomes the highest-rated player to commit to UNC since Harrison Barnes back in 2010, and in the process joins fellow 5-star, Simeon Wilcher as the lone commits in the 2023 class. Given the current state of basketball recruiting though, many players will be interested in playing with GG, meaning that Hubert Davis is far from putting the finishing touches on the 2023 group.
