Heel Tough Blog: Heels Named a Finalist for Coveted Transfer

Yahoo Sports!

Less than a week after withdrawing from the 2022 NBA Draft, and exclusively entering the transfer portal, Baylor forward, Matthew Mayer named the finalists of schools he’s considering for the 2022-23 season. Mayer named North Carolina, Illinois, Texas Tech, and Memphis as the four schools he will decide between in the near future. Hubert Davis and the Heels were one of the first schools to get involved with Mayer, and it’s believed to be they are the favorites for Mayer. The other schools in the running though all have a lot to offer in their own way, as they all figure to be in the national title discussion next season. With Texas Tech a common opponent during Mayer’s stint at Baylor, they would relish adding him to a roster that has lost multiple starters to the transfer portal.

With Carolina returning four starters from a team that made the national championship, key players off the bench, and four freshmen, the Tar Heels will enter next season as a favorite to cut down the nets in Houston next April. Landing Mayer would all but solidify that as he’s the best transfer available to fill the shoes of Brady Manek, who experienced a magical season, after transferring in from Oklahoma. Mayer averaged just under 10 points per game last season in Waco and despite rough shooting numbers, he’s still a premier offensive player. Factor in that he can defend the 2-4 positions, and Carolina’s interest in him makes a lot of sense, as they seek to get back to the Final Four, and this time finish the job.

Mayer hasn’t released a commitment date as of this moment. Make sure to stay tuned to the Heel Tough Blog for the latest on him, and any other Carolina Basketball news.
