Heel Tough Blog: Injury Update Following Pittsburgh

Prior to Mack Brown’s presser on Monday, a UNC spokesperson provided the latest update on the injured players as the team turns the page to Georgia Tech.

Star edge rusher Kaimon Rucker is continuing to progress following his minor surgery to correct an injury that took place in the weight room prior to the Charlotte game. He returned to action on Saturday against Pittsburgh but played just nine snaps as a situational pass rusher. Hopefully, this week of practice will allow him to at least see a more expansive rotational role against the Yellow Jackets.

Running back Darwin Barlow is continuing his attempt to return to the field following an early season lower body injury. If he can return, it would be a boost for a Tar Heel backfield that is looking for guys who can take some of the reps from Omarion Hampton to keep him healthy for the home stretch of the season to try to make a bowl game push.

Long snapper Spencer Triplett suffered an upper body injury in the game on Saturday and, as of Monday, was still being evaluated. If he is unable to go, the team will turn to true freshman walk-on Grant Mills, who handled the duties well in Triplett’s absence on Saturday.

The most concerning part of the update that the program provided is that there was no mention of wide receiver Christian Hamilton who missed each of the last two games with an upper body injury. Considering his initial timeline was a couple of weeks and the team is lacking a consistent deep threat with him sidelined, there is reason to be worried about what this might mean his return timeline. This probably means that the team will have to rely on Kobe Paysour, who made the move to the outside on Saturday.
