Heel Tough Blog: Is This Peak Carolina Fandom?

With the Tar Heels ranked #15 in football and #1 in basketball, I don’t think there’s any better time to be a Carolina fan than right now. In my lifetime, (Born in 1999) I can not remember a time where Carolina was this good in football and had a National Championship hopeful in basketball.

I know we’ve all given Drake Maye constant praise but I’m going to give him some more. He has given this program a shot of life that I’ve never experienced. Coupled with Mack Brown being back and Drake Maye a Heisman hopeful, excitement has reached a fever pitch. No disrespect to the basketball team but football definitely has more of my attention and excitement right now. I’ve heard this said amongst many Carolina fans. Or at least those that follow the Tar Heels outside of basketball. This team is the first since 2015 to start 8-1 and the second since 1997, and they have a chance to surpass both of those teams by winning the ACC championship. Having a squad like this in football is just the cherry on top to having a #1 team in basketball.

Basketball is always surrounded by excitement among the Carolina fan base and nationally. However, this season is even more anticipated with the runner up finish last year, and players returning for the redemption tour. Last season was the best non-championship season Carolina has had by ending Coach K’s career in Cameron and then for good in the Final Four. I believe this season is even more anticipated than the 2017 season. Perhaps it’s on par with the 2009 team. The Smith Center looked near capacity for a home opener against UNCW. This just proves the level of anticipation for this team. It has never been coupled with this level of football excitement though. This is what fandom is all about and any fan of a school’s dream. This is a once in a lifetime feeling as a Carolina fan so enjoy the ride.
