Heel Tough Blog: Jeremiah Francis Enters Transfer Portal

In a move that nobody saw coming, Jeremiah Francis has entered the transfer portal and is leaving the Carolina Basketball program. Francis was a bright spot during the 2019-20 season, returning to the basketball court after missing his junior and senior seasons of high school. It was believed that Francis would use his first season on campus to continue his rehab. An injury to Cole Anthony, and eventually Anthony Harris forced Francis on the court, a lot sooner than expected. After making his debut, he played well over 24 minutes a game, thriving at getting the ball to his teammates, and having the ability to drive the basket. Over the remainder of the season, Francis would miss certain games, allowing his knee time to heal enough for him to suit up. His averages weren’t eye popping, as he only produced 3.3 ppg, 1.3 rpg and 1.6 apg but he figured to be a big part of the 2020-21 season.

Francis becomes the second point guard in as many years to leave the UNC program, as Seventh Woods transferred to South Carolina last off-season. This leaves the point guard position blurry as Francis was believed to a big part of the rotation, as Anthony Harris worked his way back from injury.Leaky Black spent some time at the position last year, as his versatility allows him to play multiple positions. With that said, Black is way more comfortable playing on the wing without the responsibility of running the offense and defense. KJ Smith saw minutes at times, and even started the Wofford game, but he’s best suited for a backup role. Caleb Love is a 5 star prospect coming out of high school, but that doesn’t mean he’ll adjust to the college game quickly. RJ Davis joins Love in this recruiting class, and is a combo guard meaning he’s capable of playing either guard positions, but like Love it’s unknown how quickly he’ll adapt to the college game. Even after Cole Anthony announced his decision to enter the NBA Draft, the point guard position was thought to be in good hands. Now after an unexpected transfer, there’s another question mark for Roy Williams to find the answer to before the 2020-21 season.
