Heel Tough Blog: June Recruiting Preview

As of midnight on Tuesday, the NCAA recruiting dead period will be lifted and one of the wildest months of recruiting in recent memory will commence. With the dead period having been in place for more than a year, many of the Tar Heels’ top targets in the 2022 recruiting cycle are eager to get on campus. We give you a look at the Tar Heels who are expected to be on campus during the month of June.

2022 5✮ OT Zach Rice

Expected Visit Date: June 1

Type of Visit: Unofficial

While the Tar Heels may not be receiving an official visit, the first prospect that will make a visit to campus when the dead period ends is Rice. This is an important visit for the Tar Heels with every other finalist receiving a visit this month, but with the Tar Heels having received plenty of unofficial visits to campus from him during the dead period it feels like they are still in a solid spot with him right now. It seems like the consensus thinking is that the Tar Heels are one of the top three for his services right now, joining Alabama and Virginia, but it still seems like there is not a clear leader.

2022 5CB Jeadyn Lukus

Expected Visit Date: June 4-6

Type of Visit: Official

We go from one five-star prospect to another and this one will be an official visit. Dré Bly and the Tar Heels have made some major progress in this recruitment and have positioned themselves as the biggest challenger to the Clemson Tigers. The Tar Heels will have a chance to make another strong impression and close a little bit closer to the Tigers with a successful visit.

2022 4S Jake Pope

Expected Visit Date: June 4-6

Type of Visit: Official

Jay Bateman has been a big fan of Pope’s for a while now and this is a recruitment where it feels like the Tar Heels may still have a chance based on what the experts are saying. The Tar Heels will get the chance to set the bar high out of the gate and will give him something to compare every other visit to throughout the month. If the Tar Heels can knock the visit out of the park, they might just be able to give themselves a shot to land his commitment over some other big time competitors in Alabama, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

2022 4LB Sebastian Cheeks

Expected Visit Date: June 4-6

Type of Visit: Official

This is the visitor in that first weekend that there appears to be the least known about from a Tar Heel perspective heading in. The good news for the Tar Heels is that they were one of just two schools to be put on the official visit schedule along with Texas, who owns the latest crystal ball selection from the 247Sports’ experts. This is a recruitment that still feels pretty wide open right now, meaning that a strong visit for the Tar Heels might allow them to firmly establish themselves as a contender for him and maybe even become the team to beat over the next couple of months.

2022 3EDGE Beau Atkinson

Expected Visit Date: June 4

Type of Visit: Unofficial

Atkinson is ranked as the No. 2 EDGE in the state of North Carolina in the class, but to this point he has not received an offer from the staff. There is a chance that he can earn that offer while on campus for this unofficial visit, but with the Tar Heels already having Malaki Hamrick, the No. 1 EDGE in the state, it’s far from a guarantee that he will receive that offer.

2022 EDGE Donovan Spellman

Expected Visit Date: June 14

Type of Visit: Unofficial

Spellman announced last night that he will be taking an unofficial visit to Chapel Hill in the middle of the month. He currently does not hold an offer from Carolina, but he will likely be hoping that will change with this visit.

2022 3LB Deuce Caldwell

Expected Visit Date: June 15-16

Type of Visit: Official

The Tar Heels will have one midweek official visit in the month of June and that will be a guy who the staff popped an offer on recently and the teammate of Jeadyn Lukus, who we talked about above. Caldwell’s recruitment ultimately comes down to what happens with the Clemson Tigers, his dream school. Prior to his trip to Chapel Hill, he will attend Clemson’s prospect camp with the hopes of getting an offer and if he gets it, he may commit on the spot. If he doesn’t, though, this could become a two-horse race between the Tar Heels and the Central Florida Knights, the only two schools that he has scheduled an official visit with. If the Tigers don’t offer, the Tar Heels could have an opportunity to become a favorite in his recruitment.

2022 4WR Andre Greene Jr.

Expected Visit Date: June 18-20

Type of Visit: Official

The Tar Heels have appeared to take over as the leader in this recruitment in the last couple of months and he will take one of his scheduled official visits to Carolina on the third weekend of June. As with Caldwell, Greene will attend the prospect at Clemson the week before and if the Tigers are to offer, the course of his recruitment could change drastically. While an offer from the Tigers is unlikely to result in a commitment on the spot, they would likely become a serious contender and put the Tar Heels back in the thick of a fierce battle. If that offer does not come, it feels like the Tar Heels might be in a position to land his commitment with an impressive official visit.

2022 5CB Daylen Everette

Expected Visit Date: June 25-27

Type of Visit: Official

The Tar Heels have made tremendous progress with a lot of prospects on the 2022 recruiting trail over the past few months, but none more than the progress that they have made with Everette. Dré Bly has put the Tar Heels in a great spot in what has been a pretty wide open recruitment and as we head into the month of June, it appears that the Tar Heels might just be the leader here entering the month. The Tar Heels will have the chance to make the final push of what feels like a crucial month in his commitment. At the least, the Tar Heels have a chance to take over the driver’s seat in his recruitment.

2022 3CB Marcus Allen

Expected Visit Date: June 25-27

Type of Visit: Official

Allen is one of the Tar Heels longtime targets in the 2022 class and they are amongst a group of four official visits that he will take throughout the month of June and could set the table for a commitment shortly after that. The Tar Heels will be the final of the three June official visits that he will take, a group that right now contains what appears to be his top three schools. There doesn’t appear to be much separation between the three, meaning that a strong visit for any of the three schools, including Carolina, could put them in the driver’s seat.

2022 3TE Kaden Helms

Expected Visit Date: June 25-27

Type of Visit: Official

One of the Tar Heels most recent offers on the recruiting trail will also take his official visit to campus the final weekend of the month. The Tar Heels are a late entry into the race for Helms and it feels like there is some decent ground to make up here. However, the Tar Heels did receive an official visit, one that he scheduled just ten days after receiving the offer. With Helms taking all five of his officials in June, it would appear that he is closing in on a decision, something that doesn’t favor the Tar Heels.

2022 4RB Michael Allen

Expected Visit Date: TBD

Type of Visit: Unofficial

Allen is one of the Tar Heels four major running back targets and he is one of the prospects expected to take an unofficial visit to campus during the month of June. The Tar Heels seem to be in a pretty solid spot for Allen right now and one factor that could influence his decision is the fact that he may want to play baseball at the college level, as well. The Tar Heels definitely appear to have a strong connection with him, the question now becomes where exactly he is in his recruitment. If he is close to a decision, it feels like the Tar Heels have a great chance to be the pick right now.

2022 3OT Austin Kawecki

Expected Visit Date: TBD

Type of Visit: Official

Kawecki is another prospect who appears to be close to a decision, as he will take all five of his official visits in the month of June, one of which will be to Carolina. This will be Kawecki’s first visit to Chapel Hill, something that is not a great sign for the Tar Heels chances at landing him. Couple that with the fact that he comes from the state of Texas and appears to have deep ties to some of the top teams in the Big 12, including in-state and it seems unlikely that he will be committing to Carolina whenever he makes his decision.

2022 4EDGE Bryson Jennings

Expected Visit Date: TBD

Type of Visit: TBD

Jennings is another prospect from the state of Virginia that the Tar Heels appear to have pretty solid ties with at this point of his recruitment. The Tar Heels are expected to host Jennnings at some point during the month as the Tar Heels look to assume some more momentum in a recruitment that still feels like it has a good amount of uncertainty.

2022 3OT Cason Henry

Expected Visit Date: TBD

Type of Visit: TBD

Henry is another offensive tackle prospect that the Tar Heels are expected to host at some point during the month of June. He is another prospect, however, that is holding out hope to receive an offer from his dream school, in this case the Georgia Bulldogs. If the Bulldogs hold off on an offer, the Tar Heels could have a chance of landing him if he is a take for the staff.
