Heel Tough Blog: Reports Now Say Exit Discussions With Belichick Never Happened

The Bill Belichick saga has been one of the craziest we have seen in the history of sports and we have our latest twist in this story.

Per a report from Pat Welter of WRAL in Raleigh on Thursday afternoon, Tar Heels sources are refuting all of the reporting that we saw from multiple media members yesterday. According to those sources, the reports that decision makers in Chapel Hill held discussions about an exit strategy involving Bill Belichick are “false”, directly refuting the reports from TarHeel247’s Andrew Jones from yesterday afternoon. The same is being said for the Ollie Connolly reports that Belichick is looking to trigger his own buyout. “Internally they are working to improve across the board.”

When it comes to what to believe, it’s hard to tell right now. Jones and Connolly have not put out retractions to their reports so it would seem like they are standing behind their reporting, which seemed pretty concrete yesterday. This feels like the university is trying to cover their backside after they attempted to look into buyout options and didn’t find a solution that they liked.

What it means is that the team is likely to have him on the sidelines for at least the rest of the season, something that makes some sense with no obvious interim hire with how this staff is built. The hope is that part of the quest to improve across the board involves some sort of changes to the staff that will allow for the turnaround of a team that right now seems lifeless thanks to their head coach. Wednesday felt like a point of no return in terms of this experiment lasting more than a year, though, so hopefully this will be over as soon as the season concludes.
