For the second time in the last week, the Tar Heels have had a player leave the football team amidst a disastrous start to the Bill Belichick.
According to multiple reports, redshirt junior offensive tackle Trevyon Green has stepped away from the team as of Monday night. Green played in just two games this season, posting 11 snaps against Charlotte and just five against Richmond. In those sixteen snaps, he graded out with a 66.4 run block grade, a 75.1 pass block grade and a 58.0 overall grade while failing to allow a single quarterback pressure.
In his career, Green played 1,016 snaps for the team across 29 games, with 882 of those coming on offense. After playing just 47 snaps on offense in his first two seasons in Chapel Hill, he was a full-time starter for the team at right tackle last season, starting all thirteen games for the team at the position. In 819 snaps, he graded out with a 70.8 run blocking grade, a 49.3 pass blocking grade and a 61.3 overall grade while allowing 10 sacks and 40 total quarterback pressures, both of which were easily the most on the team. Green looked poised to reassume a starting job along the offensive line this season, but was beat out at multiple positions by new additions to this Tar Heel offensive line, leading to him taking a role as a depth piece at left tackle. The final straw for Green may have been this weekend when Austin Blaske returned to the starting lineup and slid in at left tackle, burying him even further on the depth chart than he already was.
With Green gone, it looks like Austin Blaske will stay at left tackle and true freshman Eidan Buchanan will be the primary backup with William Boone providing depth if needed. Blaske had a solid performance on Saturday and should provide some much needed stability to the position, especially if he is able to get healthy over this stretch where the Tar Heels play one game in 26 days.
