Martin also reported that Chapman was scheduled to appear in Chatham County district court, which The Daily Tar Heel confirmed he did do around 2:30 PM this afternoon. In a statement to Inside Carolina, a university spokesman did confirm the fact that the school is aware of the situation and is awaiting more information.
According to Hunter Nelson of The Daily Tar Heel, the female involved in the situation was charged by Durham County authorities with simple assault, a class two misdemeanor.
According to Nelson, Chatham and Orange County district judge Hathaway Pendergrass, “the women made a suicidal threat with a firearm, which Chapman dispatched when the alleged assault occurd.”
Chapman will appear again in court on October 19th. Nelson also reported that both sides were granted release when they appeared in court on Thursday with an agreement to appear in court and to have no contact with each other.
