Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels' 3✮ OT Commit Flips to Ohio State

The defections from the 2026 recruiting class have picked up over the past week and a half. The latest came on Friday in the form of an offensive lineman who, at one time, seemed like one of the more solid commitments to the class.

As he announced via his social media earlier this afternoon, 2026 3✮ OT Mason Wilhelm has flipped his commitment from UNC to Ohio State. Wilhelm had been committed to the Tar Heels since June 1st.

While this may be the fourth decommitment in the last eight days, this still shouldn’t be that concerning for Tar Heel fans. Wilhelm is an Ohio State legacy and just received the offer and the Tar Heel were recruiting over him at the position anywhere. 4✮ OT Thomas Wilder will be on campus over the weekend along with JUCO transfer Jonah Rodriguez, while fellow JUCO transfer TJ Taylor is set to visit for the Duke game. In short, the Tar Heels are still in good shape with their 2026 class, which still ranks 15th overall according to 247Sports Composite Player Rankings despite the decommitments.
