The Tar Heel staff received some exciting news on Friday afternoon, landing a target in the 2027 class that has yet to even visit campus.

As first reported by Sam Spiegelman of Rivals, the Tar Heels have picked up a commitment from 2027 3✮ cornerback Trey Johnson. His announcement comes a couple of days after he reportedly committed to cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins on Wednesday during an official visit according to Inside Carolina. He committed to the Tar Heels over teams like Arizona State, Baylor and Texas Tech amongst others.

Johnson, the No. 1265 overall prospect and No. 121 cornerback in the class according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, is preparing for his senior season at Steele High School in Cibolo, TX. Last year, as a junior, he finished with 43 total tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and two passes defensed for a defense that helped Steele capture a district title.

Johnson, who measures in at 6’2, 190 lbs., is a long, rangy corner that handles himself well in both man and zone coverage. One thing that really sticks out is how involved and physical he is in run and screen pass defense, something that will be very welcome in Hawkins’ cornerback room. He has a high motor and it shows in the plays that he runs down from behind. He looks natural playing the football in the limited clips that we see him do that, even if it isn’t resulting in big interception numbers. It may take him some time to become a significant contributor in Chapel Hill, the measurables and flashes on film make him worth the acquisition.

With the addition of Johnson, the Tar Heels now have five commitments in the 2027 class, including two in the defensive backfield. The class makes the jump up to No. 55 overall and No. 14 in the ACC rankings according to Rivals.
