While the focus might be heavily focused on the 2026 class right now, the Tar Heels have just added a significant piece to their 2027 class.
As first reported by Hayes Fawcett of Rivals, the Tar Heels picked up a commitment from 2027 4✮ RB Amir Brown on Sunday afternoon. Brown, who visited campus multiple times this past year, committed to UNC over Texas, Notre Dame and others.
Brown, the No. 303 overall prospect and No. 20 running back in the 2027 class according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, hails from Rolesville High School in Rolesville, NC. Last year, as a sophomore, he shared carries in the backfield and still finished with 624 yards and 13 touchdowns and had 297 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Brown, who stands at 5’11, 205 lbs., is an electrifying player to watch on film. His straight-line speed has to be some of the best in the class, especially at the running back position, and his acceleration and burst have to be in that elite category as well. While he may be small, he runs with a nice edge and still retains a North-South mentality, despite having the speed to win a lot in the C and D gaps. He is a major threat out of the backfield as a receiver, and he is more than just a dump-down threat, given how well he frees himself up on some downfield routes. There aren’t a ton of reps from him in pass protection, but the ones that are available show that he is a pretty promising prospect in that area. This is a massive in-state addition for the Tar Heels in their backfield and is someone who may get an opportunity early because of his talent that should only continue to blossom as his high school career continues and he gets more carries.
With his commitment, the Tar Heels’ 2027 class has two commitments with Brown joining 3✮ ATH Skylar Robinson, who committed to the team back in February. The class sits No. 17 overall in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings and No. 6 in the ACC.
