The Tar Heels have made a late addition to their 2024 recruiting class one day before the opening of the early signing window.

Earlier this afternoon, JUCO transfer cornerback Tyrane Stewart announced via social media that he was committing to the Tar Heels over fellow finalist NC State. Stewart officially visited the two schools over the weekend following East Mississippi Community College’s deep run in the NJCAA playoffs and, according to what he told Inside Carolina, really enjoyed the campus and cornerbacks coach Jason Jones.

Stewart, the No. 58 overall JUCO player in the 2024 class according to 247Sports rankings, just concluded his season with East Mississippi Community College last Wednesday where they fell to Iowa Western Community College 61-14. Despite that, Stewart and his teammates had an amazing season, going 10-3, including a perfect 6-0 in conference. Stewart was a big part of the success for the Lions this season, finishing with 64 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions and 12 pass breakups.

Stewart is a nice low-risk, high-reward pick up for the Tar Heels. He looks very natural on film, opening his hips very fluidly and has the speed to stay with receivers on deep routes. He is at his best in press man situations, which shows up often on his tape and he does a great job of staying locked on to his receiver and making plays on the football. His physicality shows up in those press man reps and it is a part of the reason why he is one of the team’s leading tacklers.

His commitment gives the Tar Heels their seventh commit in the defensive backfield in the class and has the team back up to 27 total commits after Keenan Jackson’s decommitment later in the day. The class is now up to 24th overall in the class and 4th in the ACC in the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
