The Tar Heels have been losing members of the 2026 class over the last few weeks and the position that has been most affected is the tight end spot. On Thursday, another tight end added his name to that decommitment list.

As first reported by Hunter Shelton of Rivals, 2026 3✮ ATH Aveon Williams, who the Tar Heels were planning to play at tight end, has decommitted from UNC. Williams, the No. 676 overall prospect, had been committed since June 15th.

With Williams now decommitted, the Tar Heels have just one tight end committed to the class after having four committed at one time.

The attention for the team now turns to landing one of the tight ends that they have hosted recently. It seems like, based on the information that is available, the team is really focused on three targets at the position. 3✮ ArMari Towns (Purdue commit) and 3✮ Marcus Monroe (Stanford commit) have already officially visited Chapel Hill earlier this season, while 3✮ Dream Rashad will be on campus this weekend. The hope is that they can land at least one of these three in the next couple of weeks to add depth to a tight end position that could be set to lose a contributor in Jordan Owens and a reserve in Paul Barton to graduation and possibly others to the transfer portal.

Even with the decommitment, the Tar Heels still have 35 players committed to a class that ranks 15th overall and 4th in the ACC in the 2026 class according to 247Sports Composite Team Rankings.
