Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Lose Commitment from 2026 4✮ EDGE

It took less than an hour for the Tar Heels to lose their first commitment following Mack Brown’s firing.

2026 4✮ EDGE Zavion Griffin-Haynes announced his decommitment from the program via social media about 30 minutes after the news dropped that Brown would not be returning to the Tar Heel sideline next season. Griffin-Haynes had been committed to the Tar Heels since September 8th, but had recently taken an unofficial visit to Ohio State.

The Buckeyes are the team that will be the favorite for him moving forward, but you can’t count the Tar Heels out of this recruitment. Clearly there was an attraction to UNC as the home-state school and if the Tar Heels hire a legitimate enough candidate, they could jump right back into the mix here.

With his decommitment, the Tar Heels now have two commitments in their 2026 recruiting class. The departure drops the class to No. 50 overall and No. 5 in the ACC in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings.
