Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Lose Punter/Holder to the Transfer Portal

Charles LeClaire- USA Today Sports

The Tar Heels had a transfer that flew under the radar yesterday but that will have an impact on the special teams unit next year.

Last night, sophomore punter Cole Maynard announced via social media that he has entered the transfer portal. The son of longtime NFL punter Brad Maynard will have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he ends up.

In his three seasons in Chapel Hill, Maynard played in 24 games, with the majority of the snaps he saw coming as a holder in placekicking situations. He spent the better part of the last two seasons holding for kicker Noah Burnette. With Maynard holding for him, Burnette went 99-100 on extra points and 33-40 on field goals, including 18-19 this year on the way to second team All-ACC honors.

His departure means that the team will have to find a new holder with Ben Kiernan, who held for Ryan Coe to begin this season, also departing. At punter, sophomore Tom Maginness looks to be in line to take over the duties full time after replacing Kiernan following the injury that ended his season early. Incoming true freshman Lucas Osada will more than likely slot in as his backup.
