Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Miss on Two Friday Commitments from 2024 Class

The last two days have been filled with commitments from Tar Heel targets in the 2024 class. It started off well for the team with a commitment from 3✮ in-state receiver Keenan Jackson on Thursday afternoon. Since then, though, the team has missed on three different targets, including 4✮ WR Braylon Staley and 3✮ DL De’Andre Cook.

The good news is, none of those commitments to other schools came as a shock. Just getting Staley to campus after his mind-blowing trip to Tennessee was an accomplishment and the Tar Heels have a bevy of receiver targets remaining that will be making their decisions soon. 4✮ Alex Taylor is the biggest remaining target that the team is hoping to pair with Jackson and the Tar Heels appear to be in a good spot to do that right now. Fellow 4✮ Jordan Shipp doesn’t look to have the Tar Heels at the top of his list right now, but 3✮ Javarius Green appears as if he has the team as a heavy favorite for his service. If the staff can add three receivers in this class, the room will be in great shape moving forward.

The second player to go elsewhere was 3✮ DL De’Andre Cook, who committed to Penn State on Friday evening. The Tar Heels don’t have nearly as many targets here, but they still have one that they feel pretty confident about heading into his commitment. 3✮ Justin Terrell appears to hold the team in high regard heading into his July 12th decision and looks to be the favorite right now to be paired with fellow 3✮ DL Peter Pesansky. The other name to keep an eye on is 3✮ Marcus Downs, who took his only official visit to Chapel Hill at the beginning of this month. It appears his recruitment may extend into the fall unless Terrell was to go elsewhere, especially after Michigan State recently offered him. Regardless, it feels like the Tar Heels will find another commitment here that can help fill the needs along the defensive front.
